Poinsettia , A Colorful Holiday Tradition

By: Watch Us Grow

Traditionally most of us purchase a Poinsettia for the Holidays.

It’s a great idea, lets do it,

First you need to choose a good retailer to buy from, as always we recommend your local Greenhouse or Garden Center as they are very knowledgeable about the plant.

Choose a plant that looks generally healthy ( nice dark green leaves)and has upright branches , these will be much more sturdy than a plant with outward growing branches and will have less chance of being damaged in the transport to your home.

When you have selected your poinsettia your retailer will put it in a wrap of some sort if it is not already in one. This is to protect the plant from the cold. Get it to your car as fast as you can. Poinsettia do not like the cold , drafty areas or being brushed up against, this is stressful to the plant.

After you get your Poinsettia home, place it in an area with bright indirect sunlight, if they are wrapped in foil remove it.

This is done so that water is not trapped , don’t let your Poinsettia sit in water.

The best temperature for Poinsettia’s is 60 to 80 F .

After the Holidays your Poinsettia will likely be done blooming and will lose it’s leaves. But don’t despair you can keep this plant for next year if you wish to.

When your plant has lost it’s leaves cut it back to about 6 inches above the rim of the pot.

Then feed it with 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water of Watch Us Grow Natural All Purpose Liquid Plant Food every 2 weeks. When it gets warm enough to move the plant outside, usually 50 F , do so and put the pot in the ground and continue to feed every 2 weeks until the middle of September.

Then move them to a dark place still at a temperature of 50 F with no light . Continue to feed and water as needed and the plant will be ready for the Holidays once again.

Look and Feel of Spring in your Home During Winter Months

By: Watch Us Grow All Purpose Plant Food

Yes.. You can have that look and feel of spring in your home during the winter months, And it’s easy to do , It’s called “forcing” bulbs , some good choices for this are Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus, Hyacinths .

In this writing we will talk about forcing in pots.

You should get new or sterilized pots for this project.

Your soil mixture should consist of 3 parts good garden soil 2 parts peat moss and 1 part sand, the fertility of the soil is not crucial for forcing, as the bulbs have enough food stored within to bloom once.

Plant bulbs of the same type together in their own pot, as different types have different planting needs. A good guide to go by is a 6 inch pot will hold 15 Crocus , 6 Daffodils , 3 Hyacinths or 6 Tulips.

Plant bulbs according to requirements on package , usually the nose of the bulb will be exposed.

Always use good quality and good sized bulbs.

When planting leave soil mixture loose and never press the bulb into the mixture.

Dip your bulb in a diluted solution of Natural All Purpose Watch Us Grow Liquid Plant Food before covering with your soil mixture.

Allow approximately 1/4 inch of depth from top of pot to soil as to leave room for watering. Water immediately after planting and never allow the soil to dry out.

Now your planted bulbs need a cooling off period or better known as a cold temperature treatment.

This needs to be 35 to 48 degrees F for a minimum of 12 weeks.

You can do this a number of different ways, unheated basement, attic, or outdoor cold frame, even a refrigerator. If you choose the refrigerator cover them with plastic and put a couple holes for breathing.

If you choose a outdoor cold frame, cover with straw or some sort of mulch approximately 6 inches deep.

You cannot allow the bulbs to freeze.

After the proper amount of time has passed , bring in your pots and place them in a cool sunny location . 50 to 60 degrees F is ideal for the first week or until the first shoots start to appear.

Then move them to a warmer area of the house , try to avoid direct sunlight.

Once the bulbs are blooming you will want to move them to a cooler area in the house at night to extend the life of the blooms.

Beautiful Roses with All Purpose Liquid Plant Food

By: Watch Us Grow

It seems that no garden is complete without the eye catching and always stunning rose. There are countless varieties of roses all of which have beautiful blossoms.

We won’t get into trying to name them all, but choosing the one for your garden is all in the eye of the beholder.

We will give you the basic information you will need to grow a beautiful specimen.

First make sure you have the right soil, it’s best to do a PH level test .

Don’t be intimidated by this ,it’s easy. You can get the kit at your local Garden Center. And all the instructions are right on the package, it only takes a couple of minutes to do. The ideal PH level for Roses is between 6 & 7 , this level will makeit easier for your Rose to take up the nutrients in the soil.

Then you want to make sure your soil drains well , a good way to do this is to dig a hole about a foot deep and fill it with water, if the water drains away in a reasonable amount of time ( 10 to 15 minutes ) your good to go.

This is very important , if the drainage is not good enough the plant will never become well established and grow & thrive to it’s full potential.

If you find that your soil does not drain well , there are steps you can take to remedy the problem. The best thing to do is get yourself some THOROUGHLY COMPOSTED cow or horse manure, If it is not throughly composted it will cause root burn, and likely kill the plant. Or you can always buy recommended rose compost at your local Garden Center. Remove about a 2 foot diameter by about 2 foot deep amount of your existing soil from the location where the Rose will be planted. Take that soil and mix it with the composted material.

Put a generous amount in the bottom of the hole and place the plant in the hole.

Fill in the remainder of the space with your mixture.

Or if your soil is beyond help do a raised bed and have some good soil brought in.

Then water in with a diluted solution of Watch Us Grow Natural All Purpose Liquid Plant Food. The gentle 8-8-8 solution along with 5 key secondary nutrients and the proprietary recipe called FOL-ADE will help give your Rose the start it needs to grow & thrive into the center piece of your flower garden.

Most varieties of Roses need at least 5 to 6 hours of full sun a day to reach full potential. Photosynthesis comes into play here, with the Rose producing such a prolific amount of flowers , it needs as much sun as possible to regenerate the plants energy. If you do not plant a Rose in the sun for the aforementioned amount of time the plant will become spindly , will not produce the amount of flowers it should and will become prone to disease.

I hear from so many people , I can’t grow a Rose because those plants are much to fussy and take to much expertise to raise.

NOT TRUE.

Roses are really not hard to grow at all, just follow the tips given in this writing and you will be amazed at what a great Rose gardener you will become.

Always remember that a plant like a Rose needs proper nourishment to give you the results that you expect.

The best Rose food you can get is Watch Us Grow Natural All Purpose Liquid Plant Food.

Growing Tomatoes your neighbors will envy

By: Watch Us Grow

Tomatoes are considered by many as a must have in your garden, besides being delicious they have many uses once harvested. My favorite is to grab the salt shaker and eat them like an apple. Canned tomatoes, tomato sauce , salsa the list goes on and on.

But we are writing about how to grow that wonderful fruit, and it’s easy with the assistance of our” Watch Us Grow” natural all purpose liquid plant food.

First , are you going to start your own plants or buy them from your favorite local greenhouse or garden center?

If your starting your own the one thing to remember is to start them at the right time, do this 6 to 8 weeks before the frost free date, after planting be sure to water them in with a solution of 1 tablespoon per gallon of water of Watch Us Grow natural all purpose liquid plant food.

Then give them as much light as possible either a south facing window or if you have the room use grow lights, and have them lit for at least 12 hours a day and keep the lights as close to the plants as possible without touching them.

Or like many gardeners do patronize your local Greenhouse or Garden Center, they will have many different varieties to choose from. You need to know ahead of time what variety will work best for you, if you have ample space in your garden you may want to select a indeterminate variety ( these will grow as big as you let them) or if you do not have much space or are doing container gardening you will want to choose a determinate variety ( these only grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet )

Both are good and will produce many tomatoes if you take the time to care for them properly throughout the growing season.

Next, now we are ready to plant, dig your hole, and then we suggest putting some composted material at the bottom of the hole. Set the tomato in the hole and cover it up to the first set of leaves. Tomatoes will grow roots the whole length of the stem therefore making the plant stronger .

Make sure you give your plants ample room to grow, they will need about one to one and one half feet between them , this provides room for plenty of air movement through and around the plants. Which is needed to help ward off some of the many possible problems you can have by planting to close together.

Once the plants are established you should mulch around them, there are many different materials you can use (commercial plastic, landscape fabric, grass clippings) these are just some of them, we recommend straw, lay it down several inches thick all around the plant , as you should do with any compostible material you may use. This is done for a couple reasons , to keep weeds down , to keep the soil temperature more constant , keep the water loss at a minimum , and keep the fruit clean.

Now the most important step you need to take in order to have a bountiful harvest is water and feeding. Tomatoes do best when kept at a constant moisture level , don’t let them dry out.

And they will grow and thrive to their potential when fed with a well balanced food . Your answer to this is Watch Us Grow natural all purpose liquid plant food.

1 ounce per gallon of water every 2 weeks from time of planting till you see flowers , skip a feeding and then go right back to 1 ounce per gallon of water every 2 weeks .

You will be amazed at the amount and size of tomatoes you will be harvesting. Now go grow some tomatoes.

Winter Care of Houseplants with All Purpose Plant Food

To Feed or Not to Feed

By: Watch Us Grow

Feeding of houseplants in the winter months is a subject with many different opinions.

We here at Watch Us Grow Natural All Purpose Plant Food are of the belief that all plants will need some sort of feeding during the winter months.

Just like any other living thing, nutrients are essential for good health. Watch Us Grow will deliver one of the most well balanced feedings that a plant can get.

Houseplants do not go dormant in the winter , they are still carrying on photosynthesis and respiration -keeping their systems orderly. They are just doing it all at a much slower rate.

But of course there are so many different situations with peoples houseplants. The soil is very very important. In order to have a healthy and happy houseplant you must choose the right soil, use a fast free flowing mixture that drains quickly.

Do not allow the plant to sit in the mixture that has drained through for an extended amount of time.

For flowering houseplants such as African Violets or Christmas Cactus , continue to feed them as you normally would during the rest of the year. 1 tablespoon of Watch Us Grow per gallon of water every 2 weeks, apply to soil or mist as a foliar feed.

The African Violet for instance will need to be fed through the soil.

Your nonflowering houseplants will need their feeding

dosage cut back to 1 teaspoon per gallon of water and feed them once a month.

And as always with Watch Us Grow you Natural All Purpose Plant Food can feed either through the soil or mist as a foliar feed.

Winter Care for your Houseplants

Watch the  Watering of your Houseplants in Winter

By: Watch Us Grow Natural All Purpose Plant Food

Caring for your houseplants in the winter months is very different than it is in the spring and summer months.

Lets start with the most common difference, “Watering”.

Over watering is a common problem , it can be tricky to get it right. Plants can easily be killed by this.

One method to know if a plant needs water is the old finger test, Stick you finger in the soil about 2 inches if you feel any moisture it’s good, do not water.

Other ways to tell if watering is needed is soil color, if it’s light colored, that’s a sign of dryness.

Different areas of your home will need different degrees of watering . Plants that are located near heat sources will likely need more.

One method of watering in the winter is to give them a good soaking and shower when watering is needed, set them in the tub, turn on the shower with the water set at room temperature, soak them good and let them sit in the tub for awhile to allow excess water to drain.

This also removes some of the unsightly dust from the leaves.

After a watering like this it could very well be a month or so before you need to water again. But you must always monitor your plants as every house is a little different.
