Growing Tomatoes your neighbors will envy

By: Watch Us Grow

Tomatoes are considered by many as a must have in your garden, besides being delicious they have many uses once harvested. My favorite is to grab the salt shaker and eat them like an apple. Canned tomatoes, tomato sauce , salsa the list goes on and on.

But we are writing about how to grow that wonderful fruit, and it’s easy with the assistance of our” Watch Us Grow” natural all purpose liquid plant food.

First , are you going to start your own plants or buy them from your favorite local greenhouse or garden center?

If your starting your own the one thing to remember is to start them at the right time, do this 6 to 8 weeks before the frost free date, after planting be sure to water them in with a solution of 1 tablespoon per gallon of water of Watch Us Grow natural all purpose liquid plant food.

Then give them as much light as possible either a south facing window or if you have the room use grow lights, and have them lit for at least 12 hours a day and keep the lights as close to the plants as possible without touching them.

Or like many gardeners do patronize your local Greenhouse or Garden Center, they will have many different varieties to choose from. You need to know ahead of time what variety will work best for you, if you have ample space in your garden you may want to select a indeterminate variety ( these will grow as big as you let them) or if you do not have much space or are doing container gardening you will want to choose a determinate variety ( these only grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet )

Both are good and will produce many tomatoes if you take the time to care for them properly throughout the growing season.

Next, now we are ready to plant, dig your hole, and then we suggest putting some composted material at the bottom of the hole. Set the tomato in the hole and cover it up to the first set of leaves. Tomatoes will grow roots the whole length of the stem therefore making the plant stronger .

Make sure you give your plants ample room to grow, they will need about one to one and one half feet between them , this provides room for plenty of air movement through and around the plants. Which is needed to help ward off some of the many possible problems you can have by planting to close together.

Once the plants are established you should mulch around them, there are many different materials you can use (commercial plastic, landscape fabric, grass clippings) these are just some of them, we recommend straw, lay it down several inches thick all around the plant , as you should do with any compostible material you may use. This is done for a couple reasons , to keep weeds down , to keep the soil temperature more constant , keep the water loss at a minimum , and keep the fruit clean.

Now the most important step you need to take in order to have a bountiful harvest is water and feeding. Tomatoes do best when kept at a constant moisture level , don’t let them dry out.

And they will grow and thrive to their potential when fed with a well balanced food . Your answer to this is Watch Us Grow natural all purpose liquid plant food.

1 ounce per gallon of water every 2 weeks from time of planting till you see flowers , skip a feeding and then go right back to 1 ounce per gallon of water every 2 weeks .

You will be amazed at the amount and size of tomatoes you will be harvesting. Now go grow some tomatoes.
